Introductions
Relocating to a new town comes with an interest in what you do and why you moved here. I find these discussions interesting as I figure out what I would like to say. I remember those days that my identity was centered around my work and introductions seemed easy.
How do you introduce yourself to others?
I recall years ago I joined Releasing Eagles, a youth development program, as a coach. We stood up and introduced ourselves to the children (mentees) that were the beneficiaries of the program. When you speak there is something that the other party connects with. I recall standing up, stating my name, and summarising my CV. To these children all these titles meant nothing and they did not resonate with the companies I had worked for no matter how big.
Do you lead your introductions by what you do or who you are?
The Who Am I Foundation shared a beautiful exercise with us during the Disrupt Yourself course. They prompt you to write down the first thing that comes to mind as part of a poem. Give it a try.
I am Kamin
I wonder about Life
I hear the beauty of the birds sing
I see the mountains around me
I want to be healthy
I am beautiful
I pretend …
I feel …
I touch …
I worry …
I cry …
I am …
I understand …
I say …
I dream …
I try …
I hope …
I am …

Who you are is more important than what you do. It’s taken me years to discover.
